Wantsville is the latest creative offering of Branford artist Val Kropiwnicki. A mix of functional steelwork, fly fishing related art and pieces from Kropiwnicki’s ongoing study of modern society’s insatiable hunger for more.
In the words of the artist:
While driving down a local back road on my way to pick up my son at his friend's house one day, I looked up to a hillside on my left and noticed a drab green, midcentury-inspired house sitting proudly in the low winter sun. Time stopped, and I pressed the shutter on the camera in my mind. As I turned my focus back to the road in front of me, I instinctually muttered "wantsville" and drove on.
Over the next few weeks I couldn’t stop thinking of the word - wantsville. The more I thought about it, the more I thought about contemporary society and how the underlying theme of "want" permeates so much of our focus. I thought about how we want to work less for more money, how we want more website hits and Facebook likes. I thought about how we want to be hip to that show, and go where they go, and sit there with them. I thought about how we want to be young again and to know what happens when life stops, and about how we want our party leader to be in control, and to know that our god is real, and then to have you jump on board and believe too. I’ve learned we want a lot -- some good, some bad! The pieces in this show are my reflections and thoughts, not answers to the questions posed to these and other topics of want and wanting.
