All Together Now
Sideways + Askew, Chris Engstrom, Joan Fitzsimmons
October 16, 2010 - January 1, 2011
Opening Reception October 23, 2010, 5 to 8 pm
The autumn exhibition at the River Street Gallery brings together an intriguing array of art lamps, photography and painting. As the days grow shorter, we hope that this show will illuminate the viewer – both literally and figuratively – with glimpses of urban landscapes and sublime forests.
The collaboration of Hayne Bayless and Liz Pagano, better known as Sideways and Askew, combines printmaking, pottery and sculpture. These mixed media lamps are truly functional art.
Joan Fitzsimmons exhibits a portion of her photographic series, Trees. Fitzsimmons shares her vision of trees as metaphors for very human emotional states in these expressive, yet quiet, images.
In contrast, the paintings of Chris Engstrom depict urban New Haven scenes. Bridges and waterways, outlooks from highways and city vistas: these quotidian views are captured and given resonance in Engstrom's canvases.
